Our Successes
Through HCC’s dedicated members, partners, and sponsors, we have achieved many successes, including the examples listed below. To learn more about HCC’s achievements and ongoing projects, download our 2007 Community Prevention Plan.
· In 2009 we successfully hosted five art residencies funded by the Nevada Arts Council throughout Lyon and Storey Counties. We brought 97 hours of arts education on silversmithing, film editing, music, drama, drawing nd painting to the Lyon and Storey regions. Four artists brought their talents to over 480 citizens from preschool age to adults.
· Over 100 busy volunteers do everything from unloading weekly shipments from the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and State distribution, to making phone calls, to creating emergency boxes. The volunteers many of them once recipients of the Food Bank's services, others from school, church, and club groups, report that working with the Food Bank gives them a sense of self-worth and dignity, and they enjoy contributing their labor and talents.
· We have trained 89 youth prevention leaders to plan and implement the youth prevention strategies. In 2009 our youth prevention teams reached over 20,000 citizens in Lyon, Storey and Mineral counties, educating our youth and adults about the risks of use with alcohol, drugs, and tobacco.
· During the 2008 and 2009 school years, the Dayton Resource Bank raised and donated over $5,000 to local students, enabling dozens of students to participate in advanced math and science classes, and sports, art, and music activities in the last two years. The need for education funding is great and increasing, but so is our commitment.
